Devoting time to learn about natural history (aka the study of living things in their natural environment, this often includes dinosaurs, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and other animals and insects, their fossils, and vegetation) is truly so much fun with kids! Generally they are so curious, and sincerely fascinated by living things! There are museums dedicated to the research, preservation, education and exploration within this field, and they do an incredible job of making exhibition spaces that are engaging and informative. When my son was about 3 or 4, we decided to check-out the auditorium, where there was an expert presenting on wild birds. (I know, right?!). When the Q&A began, I think his hand was the first-one up. It was emotionally rewarding to see him so eager, confident and engaged. My daughter was equally enthralled – we could easily spend the entire day.

In Los Angeles the “La Brea Tar Pits” are a chance to step back to prehistoric times, as well as see today’s archeologists working on actual fossils!
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has a Museum of Natural History, which is a bit smaller, and great for toddlers.
